Fall Boat Checklist: What We’re Seeing on the Lakes Around Alexandria

Published

Low water levels, damaged props, and warranty tips — here’s what boaters should know before pulling the boat this fall in the Alexandria area.

Your boat gave you a summer of memories. Now is the time to protect those memories and set yourself up for a smoother start next spring.

Nobody wants to talk about the end of the season yet. But a little planning in September and early October can prevent expensive surprises and last-minute stress when the ice finally leaves the lakes.

At Faction Marine, our service team is already scheduling winterization, annual maintenance, transportation, and storage. Fall fills up quickly, and storage space is limited. If you know you’ll need help, it’s worth getting on the calendar now.

Here’s what we’re seeing on the water and in the shop right now — plus practical steps you can take.

1. Watch the lake levels closely

Water levels around Alexandria have been dropping. We’ve already had several customers discover their boat was stuck on the lift after the water fell more than expected.

What to do:Inboard Boat Damaged Propeller
Before that final trip (or before leaving the boat for the season), check the water depth around your lift. If levels are low, remove the boat sooner rather than later. It’s much easier (and cheaper) to pull it while you still have clearance than to deal with a boat sitting on the bottom.

2. Take it slow at the launch

We’re seeing a higher-than-usual number of damaged props this fall. Low water, unfamiliar ramps, and a bit too much confidence are a costly combination.

What to do
Approach every launch carefully. If the water looks low or the ramp is unfamiliar, take your time. A few extra minutes of caution can save hundreds (or thousands) in prop and lower-unit repairs.

3. Don’t put off scheduled maintenance — especially under warranty

Scheduled maintenance is always important, but it matters even more when your boat is still under warranty. Manufacturers expect owners to follow recommended service intervals. Skipping annual oil changes or impeller replacement can put coverage at risk.

What to do:
Review your service records. If you’re due for an oil change, impeller service, or other scheduled items, get them done before the boat is stored. Our technicians can confirm what’s due and handle it during winterization if needed.

4. Use OEM parts and technicians who know your engine

At Faction Marine we use OEM parts and fluids. Our technicians Genuine OEM Parts. Ilmore, are trained and certified by PCM, Ilmor, and Indmar. This isn’t about making the service bill bigger — it’s about doing the job correctly, protecting the investment you’ve made, and avoiding problems down the road.

If you’re not sure what’s been done to your boat or what it needs next, ask Ben. He can pull the service history and help you decide what actually needs attention.

For a limited number of customers we offer a full concierge service. One call and we coordinate everything:

  • Dock, lift, and canopy removal
  • Boat transport
  • Fueling
  • Winterization
  • Storage

In the spring we can put the boat back on the lift and get it ready to go. If you’d like to talk through this option, reach out to Jason at [email protected].

Plan repairs now, not later

Once winterization season is in full swing, shop capacity tightens. There isn’t a lot of extra time for “while you have it, can you look at this?”Alexandria, MN inboard boat engine repair items.

If your boat needs work beyond basic winterization, let us know now. We can schedule the repairs for the quieter winter months when our technicians have the time to give them proper attention. The goal is simple: have your boat ready to go when the lakes open instead of waiting for parts or shop time in the spring.

Final checklist before you pull the boat

  • Confirm water depth at your lift
  • Inspect the prop and lower unit for damage
  • Review service records and schedule any due maintenance
  • Decide whether you want self-managed winterization or full concierge service
  • Book storage if needed (space is limited)
  • Note any additional repairs you want handled over the winter

Enjoy those last few days on the water. When you’re ready, we’ll take care of the rest.
